Highway 1 eastbound opens Sunday as floodwaters recede

ABBOTSFORD — Drivers heading east may not have to take the long way soon as Highway 1 opens in both directions.

DriveBC says a single eastbound lane between Highway 11 and No. 3 Road opened this morning, Dec. 14. Both westbound lanes have also been reopened as of 1:45 p.m. this afternoon.

“Drivers should expect slower speed limits through this area and give themselves additional time to reach their destination,” said the traffic authority. “With a single lane available, eastbound travellers in particular should expect congestion, and drive with care and attention.”

Highway 1 westbound through Abbotsford opened Saturday night, but the eastbound lanes were still covered in water at that time.

On and off ramps remain closed at Whatcom Road.

Officials are also reminding drivers not to bypass flooded areas by using side roads in evacuation zones and to respect traffic control signs for safety.

The City has launched a webpage to support returning residents.

Overflow from the Nooksack River is decreasing, but officials will continue to monitor river levels, roads and weather conditions ahead of forecast rain to find out when the second eastbound lane can reopen.
