FRASER CANYON (YALE, SPUZZUM, BOSTON BAR, NORTH BEND) — Highway 1 connecting Hope with Lytton will be closed starting Sunday night due to multiple risks associated with a heavy rain forecast, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit announced.

According to a social media post issued at 5:57 p.m. Sunday evening, the closure will affect traffic between Hope and Lytton starting at 10 p.m. Sunday night until Monday, Dec. 15. The ministry did not specify what time the highway might reopen on Monday.

The closure of Highway 1 stretches approximately 105 kms between Haig Station Road and the junction of Highway 12 with Highway 1 in Lytton.

The ministry says the closure is attributed to a due to risk of rockfall, debris flows and washouts with heavy rainfall forecast.

“There are known slide areas along both highways, as well as slopes damaged by recent wildfires,” the Ministry of Transportation and Transit said in a statement Sunday night. “These proactive closures are due to the risk of rockfall, debris flows and washouts as a result of heavy rain and snowpack melt. Both highways will be assessed in the morning.”

Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning for rainfall, with up to 70 mm possible through Howe Sound, Whistler and Pemberton, and up to 60 mm possible in the lower Fraser Canyon.

With more rain in the forecast, motorists should be aware that highways could close at any time, if conditions change.

As a reminder, Highway 3 between Hope and Manning Park remains closed due to significant damage. Crews have been at work remediating 23 active sites along the Crowsnest Highway corridor. Contractors continue to undertake major road repairs to fix culverts and road damage from heavy rains this past week. There is still no expected time for reopening.

The closure of Highway 1 and 3 means only the Coquihalla Highway remains open to connect the Fraser Valley with the B.C. Interior via Highway 5.
