ABBOTSFORD — Parts of Abbotsford are under an Evacuation Order as floodwaters from Washington State’s Nooksack River flow north into Sumas Prairie.

Late Wednesday (Dec. 10) night, Abbotsford mayor Ross Siemens said the City had declared a Local State of Emergency and issued an Evacuation Order for 371 properties in Sumas Prairie West due to risk of flooding. Residents of those areas must leave their properties immediately.

Evacuees can go to a Reception Centre that has been established at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre (2499 McMillan Road) to receive assistance. Those who have been evacuated should contact the Reception Centre either in person or online by Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the Evacuation Alert remains in place for the remainder of Sumas Prairie West. And a new Evacuation Alert was put in place for Sumas Prairie East due to rising water levels. In addition, an Evacuation Alert remains in place for the low-lying area of Clayburn Village, north of Highway 1.

The City says farmers under the Evacuation Order who are concerned about the health of their livestock should contact their Industry associations for support. It says the associations are working with the Ministry of Agriculture.

According to detailed modelling provided by federal agencies in the United States, the Nooksack rose to the major flood level early Thursday morning. The modelling suggests water levels in the river will fall through Thursday.

The City says residents should consult the City of Abbotsford app and its website for the latest information around the flooding.
