U.S.-CANADA BORDER — The Abbotsford Police Department says the southbound border crossing into Sumas, Washington has been closed to all traffic Wednesday evening due to flooding just across the border.

According to a social media post at 5:44 p.m. Wednesday, AbbyPD says the closure is intended to support emergency evacuations in Sumas, a border town that issued an evacuation alert earlier today.

The City of Sumas, Washington issued a flood notice at 3:34 p.m. Wednesday saying flooding was “imminent” and that residents were recommended to evacuate their homes and leave as soon as possible. A flood siren was activated shortly thereafter, video of which was circulated on Facebook.

The flood warning from the City of Sumas said: “Leave as soon as possible. The amount of time it takes for the water to reach Sumas can vary, and the evacuation routes out of Sumas will be closed once the water reaches them. Alert family and neighbors. Dress appropriately. Ensure you have your Emergency supply ‘Go bag.’ If you do not have a place to go, there will be available emergency shelters posted.”
