Police issue tickets after crowd of 80-100 young people in cars cause problems in Mission: RCMP
MISSION — Mounties in Mission say violation tickets have been issued to motorists after police responded to two separate incidents of dangerous driving and street racing in Mission less than two weeks ago.
According to a statement from the Mission RCMP detachment, police received a report of 80 to 100 young people in vehicles that assembled in a mall parking lot along London Avenue on Thursday evening, Nov. 27. Mounties attended and witnessed a large gathering of vehicle owners, some of whom were driving recklessly and hindering customers from accessing assorted stores and restaurants in the strip mall. Police say they learned that the gathering was the byproduct of an undisclosed social media personality who organized the meet-up. Subsequently, Mission RCMP issued tickets to what they called the “most obvious” offenders, and dispersed the crowd.
About an hour later, other witnesses notified police about 100 vehicles reportedly street-racing in the Gill Avenue industrial area. Police attended that area, conducted additional enforcement, and cleared out the crowd.
“There have been no reports yet as to whether the social media personality – who likely profited from the increased clicks and followers stemming from this event – will help pay for any of the violation tickets that drivers incurred while attending the event he sanctioned,” Mission RCMP said.
