Chilliwack poké franchises close

CHILLIWACK — Two Hawaiian poké eateries in Chilliwack have shuttered operations.

Steve’s Poké Bar, a franchise with over 20 locations throughout British Columbia, has closed at 5535 Vedder Road, unit 109, and 8635 Young Road, unit 5, in Chilliwack.

A sign outside the Garrison location on Vedder Road had the following note attached to the front of its door under the headline of store closure: “Dear valued customers, we regret to inform you that our store is now permanently closed as of November 14th. We thank you for all your support and patronage. Sincerely, your SPB team.”

The Young Road store did not have a sign affixed to its entrance, but was dark at approximately 4:30 p.m. last Thursday afternoon, a time when the store was normally open.

Both Chilliwack locations have “temporarily closed” in red when people Google their locations. Patrons could previously order through their website for either location in Chilliwack, but that option is no longer available.

Steve’s Poke Bar locations in Abbotsford (West Oaks) and Langley (Willowbrook) remain open.

Poké bowls commonly exceeded $20 with tax and featured three scoops of customized tuna poké along with vegetables like corn, edamame, cucumbers, seaweed flakes, imitation crab and sauce on a bed of rice. Megabowls containing six scoops of tuna poké approached the $30 price point with tax, but could typically feed an adult and a child.

Steve Huynh founded Steve’s Poké Bar based on his years growing up between Vancouver and Honolulu. On his website, Huynh said he learned how to cut whole ahi tuna and perfected Hawaiian poké, the must-try Hawaiian staple, from a mix of family recipes and influences from his favourite local poké joints. Prior to 2016, tuna poké venues were uncommon in Vancouver, before they spread throughout the Lower Mainland and onto Vancouver Island over the next decade.
