Chilliwack fire crews respond to Bailey Rd. fire; blaze could be suspicious in nature due to ‘grow op’ mention

CHILLIWACK — Roughly a dozen Chilliwack fire units were paged Monday evening (Dec. 8) for the report of a structure fire at a rural property on Bailey Road.

According to scanner traffic, Engines 4, 4-2, the duty chief, Ladder 4, and Tower 4 were initially paged at about 5:17 p.m. for a fire in the 46700 block of Bailey Road, east of Chilliwack River Road.

When firefighters asked dispatch if the fire was confirmed by more than a single caller, dispatch confirmed they had gotten two callers reporting a fire. As a result, Rehab 6, Rescue 1, Air Support 4, Engines 1, 1-2, 2, 5 and 6 were paged due to the second alarm being activated.

Dispatch told firefighters it was a work shed or barn on fire.

A witness named Mitchell Ives wrote on Facebook that the fire appeared to be coming from a large shed.

Responding firefighters who were some of the first on scene later told dispatch at 5:25 p.m. that the property was possibly a grow op, noting the property was fully gated off and there was no person reporting on site. They were eventually able to gain access.

RCMP units blocked traffic at Chilliwack River Road and Bailey Road and Prest/Bailey while firefighters worked to suppress the fully involved fire.

Firefighters told dispatch they had adopted a defensive attack from the outside and secured a water supply and safety officer.

Firefighters later asked RCMP to attend the command site for an unspecified reason, but it may be linked to the possibility of a grow op. Of note, the grow op has not been confirmed by the RCMP or any other authorities.

Hydro crews arrived on scene at 6:07 p.m.

As of 6:47 p.m., an excavator is set to arrive in approximately 35 minutes to likely demolish the structure that erupted in flames.
