New contract to help employ recycling depot workers facing job loss in Mission

MISSION — The City of Mission is redirecting a few workers to a new inclusive work program as dozens are set to lose their jobs with recycling services at the start of 2026.

Both the Mission and Abbotsford municipalities have recently opted to end their contracts with Archway Community Services next year as part of cost-saving efforts – terminating an over 40-year contract for the non-profit’s services and placing 62 people out of work.

Mission Council has since decided to use a portion of those savings to launch local work opportunities focusing on street and trail cleanliness across the city, such as litter and invasive plant management at the landfill, sorting assistance at the recycling drop-off, and litter pick-up at trailheads.

“Mission is pleased to have found a way to preserve an important social benefit while also tackling the growing problem of litter in our streets, parks and trails,” said Mayor Paul Horn. “Council’s decision reflects Mission’s values by lowering recycling costs and increasing value at the same time.”
