Wolf’s 28-save shutout leads Calgary Flames to 2-0 win over Utah Mammoth

CALGARY — Dustin Wolf made 28 saves for his fifth career shutout to lead the Calgary Flames to a 2-0 NHL victory over the Utah Mammoth on Saturday

Yegor Sharangovich and Connor Zary, into an empty net, scored for Calgary (11-15-4). Playing much better of late, the Flames improve to 6-2-1 in their last nine games.

Utah (14-13-3), who entered the night having won back-to-back games, finished 2-4-0 on a six-game road trip. They were also shut out in St. Louis on Nov. 29.

Wolf has stopped 54 of 55 shots in two straight starts after backup Devin Cooley started three in a row. Wolf turned in another sterling performance Saturday after 26 saves in Thursday’s 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild.

At the other end of the ice, Vitek Vanecek had 21 saves as his winless skid extended to six (0-5-1). He’s 2-6-1 on the season.

The Flames opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the game when Nazem Kadri was stopped on a wraparound, but Sharangovich chipped the rebound off the goal post and just over the line.

Mammoth: Centre Logan Cooley (lower body) was a late scratch. Utah’s leading goal-scorer with 14 was shaken up in Friday night’s 4-1 win in Vancouver when he collided with Canucks’ goaltender Kevin Lankinen. In Cooley’s absence, Utah failed to score at least three goals for just the second time in nine games.

Flames: It’s Calgary’s first victory in five meetings with Utah going back to the start of last season when the Arizona Coyotes relocated to Salt Lake City. Calgary has won its first two games of a four-game home stand that continues Monday against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Key Moment

Late in the first period, Utah strung together consecutive dangerous chances, but showing his athleticism, Wolf kicked out a pad to deny Jack McBain’s spin-a-round shot at the side of the net. A minute later, Wolf made a pad stop on a dangerous one-timer from JJ Peterka, looking for the tying goal.

Key Stat

The Flames killed off both penalties to improve to a perfect 17-for-17 on the penalty kill over their last six games. In surrendering just one power play goal over the last 10 games (31-for-32), Calgary’s kill has climbed from 23rd to sixth in the league.
