Chilliwack, B.C. -Saturday night saw the Chilliwack Chiefs take on the Powell River Kings in their annual Toque and Teddy Bear Toss game. Both teams came into the game having played the night before, with the Chiefs beating Surrey 7-2 and the Kings gaining a point in a shootout loss to Coquitlam.
The first period had everyone on the edge of their seats as the Chiefs looked to score the infamous teddy bear toss goal. Powell River got on the board first with an unassisted goal from #91 Dustin Hendry at the 6:24 mark. Chiefs’ own #91, Dustin Renas, made the Coliseum rain with toques and teddy bears at 13:02 as he recovered and buried a rebound off of Olivier Beaulieu’s shot from the point. Luke Pilkington also picked up an assist on Renas’ goal. Powell River took back the lead at 15:28 with a power play goal from Chris Battaini and increased their lead to 3-1 just a minute and a half later with a goal from Erik Wittwer. The first period scoring wasn’t done yet as Chilliwack’s Ryan Small scored his 6th of the season at 17:27 from Olivier Beaulieu and Easton Schlender.
Going into the second period, Powell River was up 3-2. At 7:47, Maximilian Brunner scored his 4th of the season to tie the game back up at 3-3. Olivier Beaulieu and Boris Borin picked up assists on the tying goal. Powell River retook the lead at 15:09 after Duncan Thompson picked the pocket of a Chiefs player and scored on a breakaway. Chilliwack saw plenty of chances in the second period, tallying 15 shots while Powell River had just 5, but ultimately went into the second intermission as they did the first, down by a goal.
