Surrey hospital to open new heart, imaging suites

SURREY — Patients south of the Fraser River won’t have to travel too far for cardiac care after new additions to the Surrey Memorial Hospital.

The hospital is opening two interventional radiology and two cardiac catheterization suites – the first of their kind in the area.

“People living in Surrey deserve health care close to home,” said Premier David Eby. “Expanding life-saving services is a part of our commitment to building up Surrey’s healthcare system so that everyone can access the specialized care they need, when they need it.”

Patients previously had to drive to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster or to hospitals in Vancouver for procedures such as angioplasties and invasive coronary imaging.

“These new suites represent an important step forward for patients and families in Surrey,” said Minister of Health Josie Osborne. “By bringing advanced heart and image-guided care closer to home, we’re helping people get the treatment they need sooner, in the comfort of their own community.”

Interventional radiology uses CT and MRI scans to guide treatments without using open surgery, which can lead to shorter hospital stays, faster recovery and lower strain on the healthcare system.

Care teams can start using the cardiology suites on Monday, December 8, with the two new radiology suites due to open on January 8, 2026.

The project is estimated to cost $97 million.
