BURNABY — A prohibited dump truck driver had some explaining to do after police caught him impersonating his brother, while his sibling sat next to him in the cab of his truck, during an enforcement blitz last week in Burnaby.

According to a statement from Burnaby RCMP spokesperson Corporal Mike Kalanj, the Lower Mainland Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (LMDCVE) group conducted a planned operation on Tuesday, November 18 on Lougheed Hwy. at Kingsland Drive.

Corporal Kalanj says police inspected 40 commercial vehicles, and of those 40 inspections, 21 vehicles were placed out of service.

Here are the complete stats from the day’s initiative:

  • 40 inspections
  • 21 Commercial vehicles placed out of service
  • 99 violations identified
  • 54 violation tickets issued

Incidentally, a dump truck was pulled over because authorities detected illegible dangerous goods placards. The driver was later found to be impersonating his brother, who was sitting in the passenger seat, as he was prohibited from driving due to an earlier Burnaby RCMP impaired driving offence.

Police have not released the name of the prohibited dump truck driver.

Corporal Kalanj says the investigation is ongoing, and the applicable charges will be forwarded when appropriate.

“The number of trucks being placed out of service is still way too high and this particular driver now faces several potential charges, including impersonation and obstruction,” said Cst. Kevin Connolly with Burnaby RCMP’s Traffic Services. “We plan on continuing these types of initiatives all over the Lower Mainland, into the new year and beyond.”

Commercial vehicle units from the Vancouver Police Department, New Westminster Police Department, City of Surrey and Metro Vancouver Transit’s Police Traffic Team contributed to the safety initiative, Cpl. Kalanj said.
