ABBOTSFORD — Police in Abbotsford say they’ve arrested an intoxicated 24-year-old man who allegedly refused to comply with police instructions and reportedly spat blood on an officer during the booking process.

According to a statement from Abbotsford Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, patrol officers responded on Saturday night (Nov. 22) at about 9 p.m. to a reported disturbance at an apartment building in the 33500 block of South Fraser Way in Abbotsford.

Sgt. Walker says the incident arose when an inebriated male subject armed with a knife began behaving erratically. All parties involved in the altercation were known to each other.

When police arrived, officers encountered the man who refused to comply with police directions. He began throwing objects at officers and made verbal threats to harm them. Due to the immediate risk to the individual’s safety and to others in the area, officers deployed less-lethal bean bag rounds from a bean bag shotgun to assist in safely taking the man into custody.

While in custody, the man remained non-compliant and, during the booking process, spat blood on an officer. It was also determined that during the initial disturbance, the man had damaged personal property belonging to another resident of the building.

Approved charges against the man consist of assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief, assault of a police officer and breach of probation. As of Monday morning, Nov. 24, the suspect remained in custody and is known to police.

“Frontline officers regularly face unpredictable and high-risk situations that require split-second decision-making to protect the public and themselves,” Sgt. Walker said. “Incidents involving weapons, intoxication, and aggressive behavior present significant dangers, not only to those directly involved but also to surrounding community members. In this case, officers demonstrated professionalism by using de-escalation strategies and, when necessary, deploying approved less-lethal options to safely resolve the situation. Their actions reflect the commitment of Abbotsford Police to prioritize safety, uphold the law, and manage volatile circumstances with restraint and accountability.”
