Surrey police expand operations as transition from RCMP continues

SURREY — The Surrey Police Service (SPS) is growing its coverage in the city nearly a year after beginning its transition from the RCMP.

As of Tuesday, November 25, the SPS assumed all operations in South Surrey with a new expansion into the east side of the police district, allowing officers to tackle calls from 48th Avenue to 0 Avenue, including Semiahmoo First Nation, and from Mud Bay/Crescent Beach to the Langley border on 196th Street.

Over 160 officers have been hired so far this year to help with the growth. The RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit will continue to police Guildford and Cloverdale throughout the transition.

“As we extend our reach into South Surrey, Surrey Police Service is proud to deepen its connection with the community,” said Chief Constable Norm Lipinski.

“We’re grateful for the patience and encouragement shown by local residents and businesses as we build a police service that’s rooted in Surrey. We also acknowledge the valuable role the RCMP continues to play in maintaining public safety during this significant police transition.”

SPS took over from the RCMP in late November 2024, with operations on the west side of South Surrey beginning in July 2025.
