COQUIHALLA HIGHWAY — The identity of the man who was killed in a rollover crash on the Coquihalla north of Merritt on Monday (Nov. 10) last week has been made public.

In a post on social media Sunday, PIT Stop Kamloops said Chibueze Nwokocha – the president of the Igbo Amaka Kamloops Society – died as he was heading from Kamloops to Merritt for work.

According to police, a man had to be extricated from a Honda Accord after it rear-ended a semi-truck in the slow lane on the highway. The say despite the best efforts of firefighters on scene, the man was declared dead at the scene.

PIT Stop says Dr. Chi came to Canada in 2021 to build a better life for his familly, and they say he was a gentle, humble, and compassionate man who dedicated himself to helping vulnerable people. He leaves behind his wife and two children, both under the age of 10.

“Dr. Chi came to Canada in 2021 with hope and determination to build a better life for his family,” the post from PIT Stop said. “He was a gentle, humble, and compassionate man who dedicated himself to helping vulnerable people through his work and through community service.”

“As the team lead and president of Igbo Amaka Society, one of PIT Stop’s community volunteer teams, he brought leadership, kindness, and a generous spirit to every volunteer shift.”

PIT Stop said Nwokocha leaves behind his wife and two children, both under the age of 10.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this difficult time,” the added.

An online fundraiser has been set up by Axis Family Resources, Nwokocha’s employer, with a goal of $13,000. Axis says funds raised will go toward helping Nwokocha’s family with immediate expenses and “provide some comfort as they navigate the days ahead.”

A second fundraiser set up by Gift Anugwa is also hoping to raise $40,000 to help Nwokocha’s wife and children with their ongoing care.
