LANGLEY — Ground has broken on the largest public school building project in B.C.’s history– a combined junior-senior high school in Langley.

The Smith Secondary and Smith Middle schools will create 2,800 student spaces. It will be the province’s first joint campus in the Lower Mainland, investing a total of roughly $306 million into the project.

“As Langley grows, schools need to grow, too,” said Premier David Eby. “These two schools will serve generations of Langley’s kids.”

Smith Secondary includes space for 1,900 students, while Smith Middle will hold 900. A new neighbourhood learning centre will also be included at the latter site to support child care and community programs in the area.

Willoughby, where the schools will be built, has experienced an estimated 25 per cent growth over the past 15 years. Eby added that building both schools on the same site helps streamline the use of space, time and resources from the province.

“The board is very excited to see construction begin on two innovative new schools that will serve the evolving needs of our learners, now and in the future, while also helping to alleviate enrolment pressures in our fast-growing district,” said Candy Ashdown, chair of the Langley board of education.

Both schools are expected to open in fall 2027.
