CHILLIWACK — An assistant fire chief for the Chilliwack believes a garage fire at a Promontory home early Tuesday morning (Nov. 11) was likely caused by an electric vehicle bike charger.

Chilliwack firefighters, including crews from Engines 1 and 4-2 and Ladder 4, were called to a home on Springgate Place in Promontory for a reported garage fire early Tuesday morning (Nov. 11).

Chilliwack Assistant Fire Chief Wade Meeres told Fraser Valley Today in an email that the fire was contained to the garage.

“The cause is under investigation but appears to be linked to a EV bike charger,” Meeres said.

Twenty-two firefighters were on scene, Meeres said. The homeowners were able to re-occupy.

There were no firefighter injuries. The homeowner was assessed by B.C. Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation and released, Meeres said.

Chilliwack Fire Department crews later returned to the home for a post-fire check overnight.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill says police were called to Springgate Place as an assist to the Chilliwack Fire Department. When RCMP members arrived, the occupants of the house were already outside the home.
