Chilliwack nature reserve assures public that salmon in its waterways are not being harmed
CHILLIWACK — A nature reserve in Chilliwack says there’s no reason for concern after salmon swimming through its waterways may have something dangling from their mouths or something else attached to them.
In a social media post over the weekend, the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society said now that salmon have returned to the Sawlein Creek, visitors to the 325-acre wildlife sanctuary may notice a peculiar device connected to the fish or a strand hanging out of their mouths.
“We’d like to let everyone know that this is not cause for alarm, as they are tracking devices installed by DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) to monitor the migration of hatchery-raised Salmon,” the Great Blue Heron Reserve said. “We’ve been told there has been a big release of these tagged Salmon, so expect to see some Salmon with extra accessories!”
The nature reserve included a picture of accessories that salmon may have embedded, including a flexible antenna, a radio tag in their stomach cavity, a spaghetti tag or a punched adipose fin.
