CHILLIWACK — Crews are now investigating the cause of a fire that sparked at a vacant home in Chilliwack Sunday (Nov. 9).

Just after 8:30 a.m., a bystander reported light smoke coming from a boarded-up home in the 9000 block of Garden Drive.

Firefighters from Halls 1 and 4 confirmed that the smoke was coming from a structure with a posted ‘no-occupancy’ sign. They went in and initiated a quick-fire attack, minimizing structural damage to the home.

There were no injuries to the public, but one firefighter received a minor injury and was taken to hospital for medical assessment. The firefighter has since been released and is expected to make a full recovery.

“The Chilliwack Fire Department reminds the public that entering vacant or boarded-up properties is both dangerous and illegal,” said Chilliwack Fire.

“These structures can be unstable and may contain significant hazards such as debris, weakened floors, or hidden fire damage. Unauthorized entry also puts firefighters and first responders at greater risk when responding to emergencies.”

The Chilliwack Fire Department adds that the incident appears to be accidental, but initial reports suggest someone entered the property unauthorized before the fire.
