Canadian Corey Wray named St. Louis City FC sporting director

ST LOUIS — Canadian Corey Wray, whose resume includes front-office stints with Toronto FC, CF Montreal and Columbus, has been named sporting director of St. Louis City FC.

The MLS team says Wray will oversee all of its sporting operations from scouting and recruitment to player health and performance, as well as overseeing the pathway from the academy to the first team.

“Corey is a progressive sporting director who brings a forward-thinking, holistic approach to building winning teams,” St. Louis president and general manager Diego Gigliani said in a statement. “His extensive knowledge of the MLS landscape, deep squad building and recruiting expertise, and proven track record in creating high performing, sustainable organizations and cultures makes him an ideal fit for the club.

“He will make us stronger by building upon our existing foundation and working collaboratively with our sporting team to improve in every aspect of our operations.”

St. Louis finished out of the playoffs this season, finishing 13th in the Western Conference at 8-18-8. Former sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel left the club in August.

A graduate of Brock University’s sports management program, Wray began his career with Toronto in 2006 as the club’s first-ever intern, working his way up to manager of team operations (2012-14), senior manager of team operations (2014-15) and director of team operations (2015-17) before becoming assistant GM.

In July 2020, he joined the Columbus Crew as assistant general manager of team operations and strategy.

He joined CF Montreal in July 2024 as a consultant, becoming the club’s director of soccer before leaving in August.

“I’m honored to join St. Louis City SC and be part of a city that is so ingrained with soccer history in this country,” said Wray. “The vision and ambition here from the fans and the ownership group are clear and that is to build a winning and competitive team rooted in development, innovation, and community”.
