CHILLIWACK — A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP says there will be additional manpower on patrol as thousands of kids and youth around Chilliwack go trick-or-treating on Halloween tomorrow, and on Saturday night.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill says the detachment will have extra frontline patrol, traffic unit personnel and plainclothes officers out Friday evening. Sgt. Mulvihill, who primarily works as an Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment media relations officer, says she plans to be present out in the community.

On social media, police said there would be zero tolerance for any alcohol or violence-related incidents.

“Expect enforcement and people will go to jail,” Chilliwack RCMP said.

Police are asking families to stick to familiar areas, set a curfew for kids, and review your route before heading out.

In terms of visibility, RCMP urge people to use reflective tape, glow sticks, or flashlights, and to choose costumes that don’t block vision or movement.

As it relates to everyday street smarts, police say kids should try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street—don’t assume they see you. Walk, don’t run, and always use crosswalks. Stay alert and avoid distractions like phones.

Drivers are being urged to slow down in residential areas and watch for children crossing mid-block or between parked cars.

For man’s best friend or furry felines, residents are asked to keep pets indoors to reduce stress and prevent escapes.
