Oilers’ Hyman out at least another week due to wrist injury

EDMONTON — Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch said forward Zach Hyman will need at least another week before returning to the lineup.

Hyman, a key part of the team’s offensive attack, skated with the club and said he’s feeling great and ready to return to action.

“He looks ready, I want to put him in,” Knoblauch told a post-skate media scrum on Wednesday. “The medical staff is holding him back.”

Hyman, who fit in ideally alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, has been out with a wrist injury that he suffered in Game 4 of the Western Conference final against Dallas on May 27.

“We said it was, bare minimum, Nov. 1, and it won’t be Nov. 1,” Knoblauch said. “It will be at least a week after that.”

Hyman said he’ll be meeting with doctors this week and hopefully there will be no further setbacks.

“I’m going to tell you I’m ready to go because that’s how I feel,” he said.” But at the end of the day, the doctors are the ones who are there to protect you from yourself at times and make sure that when you do return, you are able and ready.”

Hyman, who underwent surgery this summer, brings not only goal scoring – he had a career-high 54 goals two seasons ago – but also a grittiness the team is lacking up front.

Knoblauch said goal scoring has been an issue in most of the team’s games this season, part of the reason their record is a mediocre 5-4-2.

“Zach is as good as anyone at scoring goals, so he would give us some depth there,” Knoblauch said. “And also with our team a little tenacity, a little grit in getting in on the forecheck.”

The Oilers are home Thursday to the New York Rangers.
