Victim treated at hospital after shooting in Abbotsford early Saturday

ABBOTSFORD — Preliminary details are limited at this point, but police in Abbotsford say one person sustained minor injuries after a shooting happened over the weekend.

According to a weekend recap from police, AbbyPD officers responded to a shooting at the intersection of Clearbrook Road and Downes Road Saturday morning at approximately 3 a.m.

One person suffered minor injuries and was treated at hospital.

Police say the shooting does not appear to be connected to any ongoing extortion-related incidents, but does seem targeted.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Fraser Valley Today reached out to AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker seeking additional information on the shooting. Understandably, Sgt. Walker said no further details could be released for investigative reasons.

While the shooting doesn’t appear to be linked to extortion, that same topic remains a pressing concern for authorities in Abbotsford. Just last month, the Abbotsford Police Department launched a new task force in response to the growing number of extortion cases in the city.

From November 2023 to September 2025, AbbyPD received 38 reports of extortion-related incidents– two of them being violent. In response to the recent increase in shootings and/or arson, the Abbotsford Police Department felt it was imperative to launch the extortion task force.

“These events, and others throughout the lower mainland and beyond, have shaken our sense of security,” said Chief Constable Colin Watson. “We share the concerns we have heard and are fully committed to ensuring public safety in our community.”

The Task Force, also named “Operation Community Shield”, is made up of both full- and part-time experienced officers from several areas of AbbyPD. The group is tasked with investigating and stopping extortion events in Abbotsford, while police work with provincial and federal partners to inform a broader response.

“This is a community concern, not just a police concern. We’re committed to transparency and will keep the public informed as best we can as investigations progress,” added Watson.
