Varsity Sardis Falcons give G.W. Graham a solid challenge in Friday night football showdown

CHILLIWACK — It wasn’t the outcome that Sardis Falcons varsity football coach Sukh Parmar and his players were obviously hoping for.

Trailing only 13-6 at halftime, and down just a touchdown heading into the fourth quarter, however, the Falcons weren’t necessarily hanging their heads after a 35-20 loss to the G.W. Graham Grizzlies Friday night at Exhibition Stadium in Chilliwack.

“The players had been talking about this game for a long time,” Coach Parmar said. “Players from both teams have known each other for years through Chilliwack Giants community football program. It was a good and competitive game. We are super proud of our players; we have come a long way in the last couple years. As a football program, we’ve always prioritized building and developing good citizens, students, and football players. We have really good kids in our football program.”

The Grizzlies posted a 13-0 lead in the first half by virtue of a 15-yard touchdown run by Denver Adam and an 8-yard surge from quarterback Lincoln Boyd.

But the Falcons would not be deterred. After forcing a fumble and recovering it, the Falcons drove down the field thanks to a long pass completion to Alex Cayer, hauling in one of his four catches on the night. Cayer finished with 110 receiving yards on the night. On a third down play, running back Brody Earl trimmed the Grizzlies’ lead in half with a 5-yard run to make it 13-6, and the point after attempt was blocked.

The Grizzlies extended its lead to 20-6 by engineering a 52-yard scoring drive, capped off by a QB sneak from Boyd to make it 20-6, coupled with a successful PAT kick.

The Falcons responded on its next drive, capitalizing on a costly inadvertent face mask penalty. Once Sardis was in the red zone, the Falcons overcame a false start penalty and eventually reached the end zone when quarterback Myles Mucha (126 yards, TD pass) found Maddock Sache for a 5-yard scoring toss. The Falcons converted the 2-point conversion to make it 20-14.

Graham responded with two consecutive scoring drives thanks to a pair of rushing touchdowns from Denver Adam to give the Grizzlies an insurmountable 35-14 lead. The Falcons made it respectable even toward the very end of the game when Cayer returned an interception 55 yards to the house to cut Graham’s margin of victory to 35-20.

“I thought we had big performances from our seniors,” Coach Parmar said. “Cayer is a special athlete. He has been an outstanding player for us since grade 9. I’m sure he’ll go on and play either junior football or at university somewhere. Defensive Ends Malakai Hakansson and Maverick Causton were dominant and very effective in slowing down G.W. Graham’s run game. For the offense, senior guard, Mostafa Mohajermoghaddam, and junior tackle, Nathan Weicker, played well throughout the game.”

G.W. Graham linebackers Ridley Mastin and Royce MacCormack anchored the Grizzlies defence, recording 6 tackles and a sack, and 4 tackles and a sack, respectively. Defensive ends Quinton MacMillan and Grayson Mouritzen combined for 7 tackles, applying consistent pressure that helped keep the Falcons’ ground game in check.

Despite the outcome, Parmar said the near-capacity crowd and the Falcons’ drumline and cheer squad contributed to a pretty amazing evening.

“It was a special night. It was a large crowd and the school spirit was awesome,” Parmar said. “Our school drumline and cheer team added to the fun and exciting environment. Congrats to G.W. Graham and Coach Mike Hayes on a hard fought win. I thought their running back and linebacker, Ridley Mastin, was outstanding. He was the best player on the field.”

Fans are invite to come out to Exhibition Stadium and support the Grizzlies as they look to secure their place in the BC High School Football playoffs.
