Several police vehicles damaged, 2 RCMP members injured after driver flees police, crashes into multiple vehicles

CHILLIWACK — Mounties in Chilliwack say multiple police vehicles sustained damage and two RCMP members suffered injuries as a result of a high-speed chase that originated near Wellington Road and Lower Landing Road early Saturday.

According to a statement from Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill, Chilliwack RCMP officers conducting proactive patrols near Wellington Avenue and Lower Landing Road observed a suspicious truck at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. When an officer attempted a traffic stop, the truck fled at a high rate of speed. However, the officer did not pursue, Sgt. Mulvihill said.

Around the same time, other RCMP officers were conducting patrols in the downtown core when the suspect vehicle entered the area and was observed driving erratically through side streets. The truck eventually encountered a marked police vehicle, changed direction, and collided head-on with a second police cruiser. Despite the impact, the driver continued to flee, failing to stop at multiple controlled intersections.

The vehicle was later located eastbound on Yale Road near Prest Road, where it lost control and struck a parked, unoccupied civilian vehicle. Multiple RCMP members responded and attempted to contain the vehicle. The suspect made further attempts to flee, ramming several police vehicles in the process, Sgt. Mulvihill said.

Police say the driver was extracted from the vehicle and sustained minor injuries consistent with broken glass. A Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) was deployed during the arrest, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

In total, four police cruisers, one civilian vehicle, and the suspect vehicle sustained damage. It is currently unknown whether the suspect vehicle was stolen; this aspect remains under investigation.

“This was a dynamic and dangerous situation that unfolded quickly,” Sgt. Mulvihill remarked. “Thanks to the coordinated efforts of our officers, the suspect was apprehended, and further harm to the public was prevented.”

The driver was transported to Chilliwack General Hospital for assessment. Two officers also sustained minor injuries and sought medical attention. All individuals have since been released from hospital. The suspect male remains in Chilliwack RCMP custody facing a number of charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
