TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenceman Chris Tanev on injured reserve, the NHL club announced Thursday.

The move is retroactive to Tuesday, when Tanev sustained an upper-body injury in the Maple Leafs’ 5-2 loss to visiting New Jersey.

He was hurt during a second-period penalty kill when he collided with New Jersey centre Dawson Mercer.

A timeline for Tanev’s return was not provided in the announcement, but a player placed on injured reserve cannot return for at least seven days.
