AGASSIZ — A 40-year-old man who was convicted in 2023 for manslaughter in the stabbing death of his girlfriend has died at a prison in Agassiz.

Correctional Service Canada announced that John Wendell Keyler died earlier today, Oct. 23, while in custody.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of 4 years, 10 months, and 29 days since December 12, 2024. Keyler’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

According to a judgement from the B.C. Supreme Court, Keyler stabbed 38-year-old Sarah Foord in July 2020. Her remains were found in a secluded area outside Fort St. John, B.C. He was originally charged with second-degree murder but was convicted of manslaughter, and a second charge of indignity to human remains.

The two had been in a romantic relationship for approximately 16 months. Keyler stabbed Foord with the blade of a multitool on July 7, 2020. He transported her body, along with various other items taken from a residence, to a gas well-site location near Buick Creek, BC., and buried her body in the bush adjacent to a cleared portion of the well-site. He then went to a small body of water nearby and threw the multitool with which he had stabbed her into the water.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the CSC will review the circumstances of the inmate’s death. CSC policy mandates that the police and the coroner be notified.
