Chilliwack Chiefs name Chilliwack-raised BCHL products to their coaching staff

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Chiefs have announced the addition of two coaches to their staff roster, bringing in two former BCHL players who played in the U.S. and professionally.

The two new additions to their roster are assistant coaches Nathan Martz and Graeme Strukoff, both raised in Chilliwack and former BCHL players who had successful NCAA and professional hockey careers. They join head coach and GM Brian Maloney and video coach Lucas Bourdon, creating a staff of four coaches with deep ties to Chilliwack and to the Chiefs organization.

“It means a lot to have coaches who not only know the game but also know this community,” said Coach Maloney. “Nathan and Graeme both grew up here and understand what it means to be a Chief. That’s something you can’t teach; it’s just part of who they are.”

Martz, a New York Rangers draft pick, suited up for the Chiefs from 1997–2000 before heading south to play at the University of New Hampshire (NCAA) from 2000–2004. Martz went on to play professional hockey from 2004–2014, bringing a decade of pro experience to the Chiefs bench.

“I am very excited to be rejoining a team that I grew up watching and also had the chance to play for. This is a first-class organization with a talented staff and front office. I can’t wait to get started!” said Martz.

Graeme Strukoff played three BCHL seasons (2008–2011) before making his way to the Southern U.S. to the University of Alabama–Huntsville, where he played NCAA Division I hockey from 2011–2015. Strukoff then played professionally from 2015–2018.

“I’m really excited to join the Chiefs. I grew up watching them in the old barn and am grateful for the opportunity to get behind the bench with this group,” said Strukoff.

With four coaches who call Chilliwack home and have all played in the BCHL, the Chiefs’ bench represents a strong connection between the team, the league, and the community
