AGASSIZ — District of Kent councillors in Agassiz will consider a request for a veterans memorial crosswalk from a local representative of the Royal Canadian Legion at their meeting today.

Dave Eidet, Sergeant at Arms for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 32 in Agassiz, has asked to address Mayor Sylvia Pranger and District of Kent councillors today (Wednesday, Oct. 15) about a proposed veterans crosswalk, according to agenda item No. 6 in the 204-page agenda package.

As part of the proposal, the district would be asked to supply the labour and materials to complete the crosswalk. The Royal Canadian Legion has already purchased a stencil for the design.

There are four suggested locations for the crosswalk including:

· Parallel to Highway 9 over Morrow Road

· Intersection of Heath Road and Vimy Road, over Morrow Road

· Running parallel to Morrow Road across Vimy Road

· Anywhere close to the Agassiz Cenotaph

Veterans memorial crosswalks have begun appearing throughout British Columbia in cities like Richmond, Maple Ridge, Langley, Sidney, and Trail.

The Royal Canadian Legion says on its website that community commemorative crosswalks, as they call them, are coordinated at the local level. Individuals who wish to honour veterans through a commemorative crosswalk should contact a local Legion branch or their local city hall to examine the feasibility. It says a growing number of Legion branches and communities are developing crosswalks to honour veterans. To support branches and communities with their crosswalk initiatives, the Legion provides an alternative crosswalk to honour veterans.
