Delta Hospital temporarily suspends E.R. services due to doctor shortage

DELTA — Fraser Health authorities have now issued a temporary service interruption at the Delta Hospital emergency department due to physician staffing issues.

From today (Oct. 4) at 6 p.m. to Sunday, October 5 at 6:30 a.m., patients already in the emergency room will be seen by a doctor before shifts end at 1:30 a.m.

Emergency-trained nurses will be on site to support or redirect walk-ins who require basic care and to direct patients with urgent needs to a neighbouring hospital.

Anyone with a life-threatening emergency, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing or severe bleeding, should call 9-1-1 immediately to be transported to the nearest available and appropriate facility.

“We recognize how important consistent access to emergency care is for the Delta community and we are actively working to address physician staffing gaps as they arise to maintain service continuity,” said Fraser Health.

“Should further service interruptions become necessary, we will communicate this to the community in advance to support our patients and their families in feeling informed and prepared.”

All other services at Delta Hospital remain available.

Residents can still contact Fraser Health Virtual Care at 1-800-314-0999 to speak with a registered nurse from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., or call 8-1-1 outside these hours for a health service navigator or a registered nurse.
