CHILLIWACK — Police confirm that one individual has passed after a vehicle was fully submerged in the Fraser River near Ballam Road on Friday afternoon (Oct. 3).

First responders were dispatched to the scene of 46866 Ballam Road at around 2:45 p.m. Preliminary investigation shows that the 2001 green Audi sedan struck a hydro pole before entering the river.

Bystanders rescued both individuals from the submerged vehicle and gave CPR until emergency personnel arrived.

Three ground ambulances, an advanced care paramedic responder unit and an air ambulance helicopter responded.

Two people were airlifted to hospital – one in stable condition and one in critical condition, according to a statement from BCEHS, but RCMP later told Fraser Valley Today that a 71-year-old woman from Chilliwack has since been pronounced dead.

“The investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing. Chilliwack RCMP is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or observed the vehicle’s driving behaviour prior to the collision to contact the detachment,” said Sergeant Alexandra Mulvihill with the Upper Fraser Valley detachment.
