CHILLIWACK — It had all the feeling of a playoff contest under the bright lights of a packed Exhibition Stadium last Friday night in Chilliwack.

And the G.W. Graham varsity football team put on a performance worthy of the electric atmosphere.

Senior standout Ridley Mastin racked up 238 yards on just 17 carries, while quarterback Lincoln Boyd was nearly perfect on 12-of-13 passing for 228 yards and 3 TDs, to outlast the Terry Fox Ravens (Port Coquitlam) in a 42-21 win.

As fans from both teams packed the stands and a vibe buzzing throughout the stadium, both teams put on an impressive first-half show, heading into the break tied 14-14.

But it was all G.W. in the second half. Graham’s offense came alive after halftime, scoring on six of seven drives behind a perfectly balanced offensive attack. The Grizzlies recorded 258 yards on the ground and 228 through the air — overwhelming the Ravens’ defense with relentless pace and execution.

Not only did Mastin average a remarkable 14 yards per touch, he also hauled in a 10-yard reception and scampered 60 yards on two kickoff returns, showing off his all-purpose versatility.

Boyd, the playcaller behind center, distributed the ball to six different receivers for a quarterback rating of 158.3. Boyd’s top target on the night was Cody Hagel, who finished with 4 catches for 112 yards and two scores.

Defensively, the Grizzlies faced a physical test from the Ravens’ hard-charging running backs but stood strong throughout the contest. Linebacker Ridley Mastin was once an anchor on defence by leading the team with 8 tackles. Royce Maccormack added 6 tackles, while Quinton McMillan, Grayson Mouritzen, and Lincoln Glenn each chipped in with 5 stops to keep the Ravens from gaining momentum in the second half.

With the win, the Grizzlies — currently ranked 8th in the province — set the tone for what should be an exciting season. Their next challenge comes this Friday, October 3 when they travel to Abbotsford to face the top-ranked W.J. Mouat Hawks in a marquee matchup at 7:00 PM. Fans can expect another thrilling battle as G.W. Graham looks to build on their early momentum.
