Chilliwack RCMP prevent money scam in progress

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Mounties say they were able successfully thwart an attempted bail money scam.

Police say they were called to a local financial institution Friday (Sept. 26) morning after receiving a complaint of a fraud in progress. Together with bank staff, a bail scam which had targeted a vulnerable community member, was prevented.

Police say the incident was resolved without any financial loss, however they believe those behind the scam are still active in the community.

RCMP say the fraudsters are targeting seniors primarily, claiming a family member has been arrested and urgently requires bail money.

Police say the scam artists attempt to create a sense of panic or urgency with their victims and then negotiate an affordable amount of money that the target can provide, before setting up a in-person meeting to accept the money.

Mounties are urging residents to be on alert for similar scams. They say residents should never share personal or financial information with unknown callers. If a loved one is in trouble, verify the situation with another trusted member of the family. And if they suspect anything, they should call RCMP immediately.
