Low-level helicopters flying over Fraser Valley for pipeline inspection

MISSION — Residents from Chilliwack to Mission may catch a glimpse of some low-flying choppers over the next month as FortisBC conducts its annual gas pipeline inspection in the Fraser Valley.

The gas company’s contractor, Talon Helicopters, is set to fly over the region’s transmission pipeline corridor from September 23 to October 23.

“Authorized by Transport Canada, these daylight flights use aerial LiDAR technology to assess pipeline integrity as part of annual safety and reliability maintenance,” said the City of Mission.

LsSen Inc.’s Light Detection and Ranging technology allows inspectors to conduct all operations from the air – no ground action necessary.

Schedules are dependent on weather and wildfire conditions, and flight times will be kept short over any single area.

The inspection work was initially planned for May to June this year, but has since been rescheduled.
