MANNING PARK — While a smaller fire near Manning Park Resort is officially being held, a much larger wildfire in E.C. Manning Park remains out of control.

According to the B.C. Wildfire Service online dashboard, a 4.5-hectare fire southeast of the resort is now being held. It was first discovered on Saturday, September 6 and was likely caused by lightning.

BCWS personnel say clear skies have allowed for a more accurate calculation of the true size of the wildfire. The fire was exhibiting rank 1 with pockets of rank 2 fire behaviour. Crews previously established trails to access 95 per cent of the fire and a sprinkler line on the west flank to prevent growth.

However, a much larger wildfire of 1,651 hectares remains out of control in Manning Park northeast of Highway 3 on the southern slopes of Snass Mountain. It was first discovered on August 31.

The fire is located northeast of Highway 3, in Manning Park, on the southern slopes of Snass Mountain. As of Tuesday, Sept. 16, fire activity is low, and there’s been little growth toward Highway 3. Bucketing support is being activated as required.

The south flank of the fire remains about 500 metres above the highway. Crews have created a control line between the fire and Highway 3 as a contingency in case the fire spreads farther in that direction, according to the last BCWS update from Tuesday, Sept. 16.
