Completion of new Chilliwack school pushed back several months

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack School District now says the completion of the new elementary school in Rosedale won’t be finished until spring 2027, a delay of several months over the previously anticipated target.

According to a social media post over the weekend, SD33 reported that construction has been underway at the new east side elementary school on McGrath Road throughout the summer.

“The new elementary school will have space for 500 K-5 students and construction is expected to be completed by Spring 2027,” SD33 wrote.

However, that anticipated completion date is at least three months longer than what an SD33 spokesperson told Fraser Valley Today back in April 2025.

According to a statement from spokesperson Amy Dhanjal dated April 16, 2025, bids for the construction of the new East Side Elementary School on McGrath Road in Rosedale closed in early March 2025, and the project was awarded to Double V Construction Ltd.

Dhanjal told FVT in April 2025 that construction was expected to be completed by December 2026. While the school was originally projected to open in September 2026, Dhanjal says the complexity of building on a property partially located in the Agricultural Land Reserve and within a flood plain added additional time to the early planning stages. The new school is anticipated to open in September 2027.

The design for the new east side elementary includes one level of parking and three levels of school space. Adding underground parking raises the future school to the required height above the flood plain and meets City parking bylaw requirements.

Double V Construction is a Surrey-based contractor which is also working on the addition at Sardis Secondary School. They have experience building additions and new schools across several school districts including Maple Ridge and Langley.
