ABBOTSFORD β€” The City of Abbotsford is giving the green thumbs up for an all-ages community event marking National Tree Day this month.

On September 27, Parks Planning staff are set to help volunteers plant 12 new trees at Amblewood Park. Sessions will be offered every 30 minutes from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., with about four individuals able to join at each time.

Volunteers will be planting dogwood tree seedlings – a small to medium tree that blooms with flowers in the spring and dyes its leaves orange and red in the fall.

β€œIt also attracts birds and butterflies, helping to support nature in our communities,” the City added.

Other participants can learn how to create key chains from invasive plants through the Invasive Art Initiative, with workshops offered in 15- to 20-minute increments from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The City will also be giving away 150 tree seedlings for residents to plant at home, with the City arborist standing by to advise on proper tree care.

On-site registration is required for both free events.

Drivers are also reminded that street parking is limited at Amblewood, but additional slots are available at King Road and in the Abbotsford Canadian Reformed Church parking lot.
