ABBOTSFORD — The Abbotsford Police Department says no charges are being recommended after a Fraser Valley man alleged that he was assaulted by a security guard at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre in Abbotsford.

In a social media post that was widely circulated over the weekend, a man named Jonathon McCue claimed that he was physically assaulted by a security guard.

“On September 4th, 2025, at approximately 6:06 p.m., I was physically assaulted by a GuardTech employee at Seven Oaks Mall in Abbotsford, BC. The employee attempted to seize my phone and shoved me in the process. After being unsuccessful in his attempt to intimidate me, he departed the area. The matter is currently under police investigation,” McCue said online.

In his social media post, McCue asked people not to resort to racist remarks in the 100 Million Indigenous Facebook Users group where he made the post. “As Indigenous people, we hold ourselves above the settler-colonial mindset,” McCue said.

AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says no charges are being sought pursuant to the police file.

“After reviewing the file and video footage related to the incident at Sevenoaks Mall, I’d like to provide some important context. At the time of the incident, mall security was actively working to evacuate the premises due to a fire alarm activation,” Sgt. Walker said. “It was unclear whether there was an actual fire, so security personnel were prioritizing the safety of store employees and patrons by clearing the mall.”

Sgt. Walker says McCue, however, began recording on his phone and continued walking through the mall, appearing indifferent to the evacuation efforts. Mall security approached him and instructed him to leave immediately and stop recording, as his actions suggested he was more focused on filming than complying with safety protocols. Sgt. Walker alleges Mr. McCue responded by verbally confronting the guard, telling him to “F-off.”

When the security guard raised his hand to block the camera, McCue responded by pushing the guard, Sgt. Walker alleges. Mall security subsequently contacted police to report the assault. McCue also called police.

“While social media can be a powerful tool for sharing information, in this case, the narrative being circulated does not accurately reflect the full scope of what occurred. No charges are being sought in this investigation which is now concluded,” Sgt. Walker said.
