Coquihalla reopens after closure from Mine Creek wildfire

COQUIHALLA HIGHWAY — Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt has now reopened in both directions after being shut down due to a wildfire.

The Mine Creek wildfire, which sits at 1,900 hectares as of this morning (Sep. 5), is displaying low-vigour surface fire behaviour at ranks 1 and 2.

Drivers are asked to be prepared for closures with minimal notice, given how close the fire is to the highway. Officials also ask motorists not to stop in the fire zone.

“Intermittent lane closures can be expected as crews continue to assess and repair roadside damage, and visibility is reduced due to wildfire smoke,” the Ministry of Transportation and Transit stated.
