Canadian team drops to ninth at world black bass competition

The bite slowed down for Canadians Dave Chong and Ben Stokdijk.

Chong, of Aurora, Ont., and Stokdijk, of Lower Truro, N.S., finished 20th on Friday at the world black bass championship at South Africa’s Arabie Dam. The Canadians, who led the team event after Thursday’s round, fell to fifth overall.

Chong and Stokdijk had a solid start Thursday with a five-fish bag that weighed 10.41 kilograms (22.9 pounds).

Jason Hynes of Gananoque, Ont., and Rick Kewell of Kingston, Ont., finished 13th Friday with 6.1 kilograms (13.42 pounds) to stand 14th overall. Hynes and Kewell opened with 4.11 kilograms (9.04 pounds) on Thursday.

Phil Curtis, of St. Catharines, Ont., and Adam Foster of Charters Settlement, N.B., are 36th overall.

Canada dropped one spot to ninth in the overall standings in the 15-country event with 35.170 kilograms (77.37 pounds).

Canada was seventh at last year’s event on Italy’s Lake Bolsena. The 2025 competition concludes Saturday.
