UPDATE #2: The BC Highway Patrol is appealing for witnesses to come forward following yesterday’s serious motor vehicle incident on Hwy. 1 in Chilliwack that sent an elderly Alberta man to hospital in serious condition.

According to a statement from BCHP spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin, eastbound Highway 1 between Yale Road (exit 109) and Lickman Road (exit 116) was closed for almost eight hours after a white Toyota Tacoma pickup and a black GMC Sierra pickup collided. The accident happened just before 3:30 p.m. Due to the speed of the collision, both vehicles rolled into a deep ditch on the side of Hwy. 1.

BC Highway Patrol officers are now asking for more witnesses and dash camera video to determine exactly what happened.

The 18-year-old Chilliwack man who was driving the white Toyota Tacoma received minor injuries. The elderly Alberta man who was driving the GMC was taken to hospital by air ambulance. His injuries are serious and may be life-altering.

UPDATE: Highway 1 through Chilliwack fully reopened in both directions late Wednesday night. Highway 1 westbound between Yale Road and Lickman Road had already reopened closer to suppertime, but Highway 1 eastbound reopened late Wednesday evening.

Original story:

CHILLIWACK — At least three B.C. Emergency Health Services ambulances and four Chilliwack Fire Department engines were dispatched for a rollover on eastbound Hwy. 1 through Chilliwack Wednesday afternoon.

According to scanner traffic, a vehicle rolled over off the side of Highway 1 eastbound in a location across from Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, between Yale Road and Lickman Road.

First responders were paged at about 3:16 p.m.

A helicopter has been paged for a possible launch. Their expected time of arrival is 3:55 p.m.

Firefighters have asked that Highway 1 be shut down so that the helicopter can land on Hwy. 1. When the helicopter is about 10 minutes out, firefighters have then asked that the landing zone be set up right on the highway.

Approximately 13 firefighters are on stand by at various halls, underscoring the severity of the incident and the number of fire personnel who were paged.

As of 3:36 p.m., Google Maps is showing dark red traffic in both directions between Yale Road (exit 109) and Lickman Road (exit 116).

Firefighters radioed dispatch at 3:47 p.m. to say one patient has been extricated from a vehicle and transferred to B.C. EHS.

A helicopter has landed, according to pictures and video from Chilliwack resident William Snow.
