MISSION — Police in Mission are urging road users to stay safe and alert as kids start heading back to class this week.

“Roads all around Mission will be busier now that people are back to school and back to work after summer holidays, so leave yourself lots of extra time to navigate the busy roadways,” said Mission RCMP.

Drivers travelling on Cedar Street near Cherry Avenue are asked to keep an eye out for a new school zone being added along Cedar, while pedestrians must look both ways before crossing the street.

Officers will be watching for anyone speeding or using their phones in school and playground zones. The RCMP also hopes to remind motorists of the following key rules:

  • School zone signs indicate a speed limit of 30 km/h from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., every school day.
  • Playground zone signs pose a speed limit of 30 km/h from dawn until dusk every day, unless the yellow signs do not display a black and white speed limit below.
  • Stop signs mean stop.

“Leaving the house a few minutes earlier will help you to concentrate on the traffic and pedestrians around you, instead of focusing on trying to make the next light, or rolling through a stop sign.”
