Mission family seeks help after motorcyclist suffered spinal injury in serious crash

MISSION — A Mission man may now be permanently disabled after a serious collision with a driver last week, and his loved ones are appealing for help.

On August 24, Jon Coffin was travelling down Hurd Street when he struck a car – which had allegedly been pulled over in a police traffic stop shortly prior – turning in the same direction.

Coffin was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital, where his family learned he’d suffered a traumatic spinal injury. He has since had surgery at Vancouver General to stabilize his spine, but his daughter, Brittany, said it is “very unlikely he will ever walk again.”

His wife, Cheryl, was also injured in a work-related accident only a couple of days before. With both breadwinners facing a tumultuous future, one of Jon’s coworkers has started a fundraiser to help the family.

“He’s just such a personable guy,” said Sharm Lanctot, the campaign organizer. “[He’s] very extroverted, […] he can just strike up a conversation with absolutely anybody, and he’s just so friendly, such a nice guy.”

“It’s pretty horrifying that this has happened to him.”

Fighting to keep the lights on

Jon has three adult children and four grandkids, but he and his wife currently care for two other people under their roof. Their daughter Hailey, who is on the spectrum, and Cheryl’s disabled older sister.

“I just feel really bad for Cheryl, […] she’s not at work right now, which is a good thing, in a way, because she’s free to be with him, but then she’s got the stress of trying to fill out the paperwork for missing work because of her injury,” added Lanctot. “It’s just crazy timing for all of it.”

The GoFundMe has raised $5,090 of its $5,500 goal at the time of writing.

“Your donations will help keep their lights on, food in their fridge and transportation to get those groceries,” wrote Brittany.

Cheryl does not drive and will need help visiting Jon in Vancouver. The family will also need to pay high rent fees and ideally move into a more affordable, wheelchair-accessible residence in the future.

Jon is currently out of surgery on life support.
