Fraser Valley police ramp up presence ahead of back-to-school season

CHILLIWACK — The RCMP’s Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment (UFVRD) from Boston Bar to Chilliwack is gearing up for the next week as students start heading back to class this fall.

“With more children walking, biking and taking school buses this time of year, school zones demand a driver’s full attention,” said Sergeant Alexandra Mulvihill, spokesperson for the UFVRD.

“This September, you will see extra RCMP members in school zones throughout all our communities, actively educating and enforcing school zone rules. Our goal is simple, keep children safe.”

Police are sharing a number of tips to kick off the school year safely on the roads:

• Students must use crosswalks whenever possible.
• Stop, look and listen before crossing the street.
• Drivers must stop for school buses with flashing lights and extended stop signs, and cars in both directions must come to a complete stop until the bus has moved on.
• Parents are asked to encourage kids to put away phones and headphones when walking or cycling.
• Use the designated drop-off areas and avoid double parking or blocking intersections.

Drivers are also urged to be more alert during peak hours, with school zone speed limits starting between 7:30 and 8 a.m. across the region.

“Road safety is a community effort. With extra members out educating and enforcing in school zones, we’re asking drivers, parents and students to do their part in making this school year a safe one.”
