MANNING PARK — A Chilliwack dump truck driver is facing driver penalties after his commercial vehicle jackknifed, struck and totaled a BMW, and caused a partial closure of Highway 3 in Manning Park Wednesday, with speed a likely factor.

According to a statement from BCHP spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin, police were called to a collision on Highway 3 (Crowsnest Highway) just east of Cayuse Flats on Wednesday, August 27 at approximately 1:35 p.m. Police say a dump trucker jackknifed into its own trailer before colliding with a BMW sedan occupied by two men from North Vancouver and Burnaby, respectively. As a result of the collision, the highway was down to a single lane of traffic for several hours.

Police say injuries were minor, but the BMW was totaled. The dump truck was carrying a load of coal that spilled into the Skagit River. The BC Ministry of Environment is now monitoring the situation and working with the truck company on appropriate cleanup.

The BC Highway Patrol investigation determined that speed was a factor in the collision. The dump truck driver, a 39-year-old resident of Chilliwack, was issued a BC Motor Vehicle Act ticket for:

  • Driving without due care and attention, section 144(1)(a), with a fine of $368 and 6 penalty points against the driver’s licence.

“Commercial truck drivers cannot travel safely at the speed of smaller, lighter vehicles We ask that all commercial drivers exercise more care,” says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “The rest of us need to be patient with truck drivers. A slower truck is likely a safer truck.”
