Major changes to curbside collection in Chilliwack starting in 2026
CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Mayor Ken Popove is touting new changes to the city’s curbside collection program that will roll out next year.
In a statement from the municipality, the City of Chilliwack says it will initiate changes to its garbage pickup that will result in automated collection of garbage, recycling and compostable waste with the help of standardized carts. The changes take effect May 1, 2026, and will now feature a new separate bin for flexible plastics.
“Chilliwack residents are great at sorting their garbage, recycling, and compost, and the new carts will make it even easier,” said Mayor Popove. “The new collection program is another way Council is saving costs and improving efficiency for Chilliwack folks.”
The city conducted two curbside collection surveys over the last two years, which indicated residents were in favour of a fully-automated cart-based program for garbage, recycling and compostable waste. The city suggests fully-automated collection systems will bring about reduced injury risks for collection staff and improved collection efficiency, since all materials will be collected in the same truck with separate compartments.
