UPDATE: Sunday’s crash claimed the life of a 74-year-old woman from Agassiz

UPDATE #5, 9:15 A.M. MONDAY: A spokesperson for the BC Highway Patrol has confirmed that a 74-year-old woman from Agassiz died in Sunday’s single-vehicle crash on Highway 1 near Prest Road in Chilliwack.

According to a statement from BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin, a grey Ford Focus was travelling eastbound on Highway 1 approaching Prest Road Sunday afternoon, Aug. 17, at approximately 12:50 p.m., when it crashed and rolled over into a ditch. The 74-year-old Agassiz woman who was the driver and lone occupant of the Ford Focus died at the scene.

“At this early stage of the investigation, there are no indications of overt criminality,” says Corporal McLaughlin. “Police have already spoken to witnesses, but we would like to find more to ensure the investigation is appropriately thorough.”

UPDATE #4, 9 P.M. SUNDAY: DriveBC now says the westbound right lane east of Prest Road on Highway 1 has reopened. Crews remain on scene. The flipped truck has been towed away. “Continue to expect delays due to congestion,” DriveBC said at 9:01 p.m.

UPDATE #3, 8:44 P.M. SUNDAY: In what has been a busy day for Chilliwack-area first responders, DriveBC reported at 8:21 p.m. Sunday night that a vehicle incident on Hwy. 1 has the westbound lanes blocked at Prest Road while towing and cleanup continue.

Motorists will need to exit at Prest Road (exit 123). Motorists should expect delays due to congestion.

As of 8:45 p.m. Sunday night, Google Maps shows heavy (dark red) traffic for westbound Highway 1 through Chilliwack between Annis Road and Prest Road.

UPDATE #2, 6:31 P.M. SUNDAY: There’s been a second rollover on Highway 1 Sunday afternoon in Chilliwack.

According to a social media post from DriveBC at 6:17 p.m., a vehicle rollover has the left lane blocked just after Prest Road (exit 123). Crews are on scene. Motorists should expect a westbound delay due to what DriveBC says is a “visual distraction.”

According to the Chilliwack Scanner Facebook group, there are reports of a third motor vehicle incident eastbound on Highway 1 near Lickman Road, as of 6:27 p.m. Sunday.

UPDATE #1, 6:07 P.M. SUNDAY: Corporal Dave Noon from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service of B.C. reported at 5:43 p.m. on X/Twitter that eastbound Highway 1 through Chilliwack is expected to fully reopen within the hour.

CHILLIWACK — All lanes have been closed off for drivers going eastbound on Highway 1 after a car rolled over into a ditch in Chilliwack.

DriveBC reported the vehicle incident before Prest Road shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 17). The road has now been blocked between exit 123 on Prest and exit 120 on Young Road.

Witnesses in the area reported three ambulances on the scene, as well as two fire trucks and one RCMP vehicle supporting traffic control.

CPR was administered to one patient who was pulled out of the vehicle, according to scanner traffic.

The unit responsible for supporting investigations of crashes that lead to serious injury or death has been deployed.

Corporal Dave Noon, a forensic collision reconstructionist with the Lower Mainland ICARS, said the closure will remain for several hours with no expected time for reopening.
