Flash floods kill a further 56 people in Pakistan’s northwest
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Flash floods triggered by heavy rains and cloudbursts early Friday killed at least 56 people in Buner in Pakistan’s northwest, a government administrator said.
Kashif Qayyum said dozens were injured as the deluge destroyed homes in villages in Buner, a district in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Rescuers backed by boats and helicopters were working to reach stranded residents.
He said dozens of villages were still missing, and the death toll from the flooding is likely to rise.
The latest deaths are in addition to 60 people who were killed in rain-related incidents across Pakistan in the past 24 hours.
