CHILLIWACK — Mounties have quickly arrested two people in relation to a break-and-enter at the Child and Youth Advocacy Centre (CYAC) in Chilliwack late July.

Police responded to the incident at the Chilliwack Community Services Building, located at 100-46187 Yale Road, on July 29. Two men were subsequently arrested on July 31, thanks to the assistance of video surveillance and local police knowledge of prolific offenders.

“Chilliwack RCMP Priority Target Teams (PTT) primary focus is on prolific offenders who prey on every corner of society and cause the most harm to the community through property and violent crime,” said Priority Target Teams Sergeant David Mackie.

“In this investigation, the Chilliwack PTT promptly identified and arrested these two offenders for break and enter and stealing from the brand-new Chilliwack Youth Advocacy Center, a service established to support and bring healing to the most vulnerable children in our community.”

On August 1, PTT obtained search warrants for the two Chilliwack homes frequented by both men, yielding stolen property from the CYAC as well as the Central Pentecostal Assembly.

Items stolen from the Centre included money, gift cards, and cheques– all specifically used by the Centre’s programs to help kids after instances of child abuse.

Chilliwack resident Richard Johnathan Wells and 29-year-old Branden Gamble have each received one count of breaking and entering.

Wells was released from jail on a 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. curfew on top of other conditions. Gamble has been remanded in prison since the arrest.

Chilliwack RCMP ask all residents and businesses to help minimize crime by installing outside lighting, using surveillance cameras, and locking doors and windows. Police also urge folks to report any suspicious behaviour or persons, through the non-emergency line at 604-792-4611.
