Chilliwack MLA calls out B.C. govt. for refusing to help 6 Chilliwack families impacted by 2021 floods
CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack-Cultus Lake MLA Á’a:líya Warbus says the B.C. government’s decision to deny funding to six Chilliwack families whose homes were heavily damaged by the 2021 atmospheric flooding is outrageous.
In a statement Thursday, Warbus says new revelations confirm what Chilliwack River Valley residents have feared for years: the provincial government had the power and funds to help — and chose not to.
The B.C. Conservative Party says a recent Postmedia investigation revealed that the provincial government forked ovr $2.25 million in 2009 and 2011 to buy out two landslide-threatened properties on Chilliwack Lake Road. Today, six families in the same area face similar risks but have been denied all compensation or support. One property was assessed at just $2.
“You can’t live in the home, you can’t fix it, you’re told to keep paying the mortgage, and then they have the audacity to offer you two dollars. What does that say about this government’s priorities?” said Warbus, who also serves as the Opposition house leader.
